Sustainability and the environment in focus

As a supplier in the retail sector, we have an additional responsibility to do everything in our power to leave a positive impact on the environment. After many years, the consumption pattern has changed from "use-and-throw" to more towards environmentally conscious choices. Both consumers, businesses and the public sector are embracing the green shift - and taking more responsibility for their choices. As a supplier to the consumer market and the public sector, we want to be a safe and good choice, with a clear focus on the environment and sustainability.

BEDTIME IS ENVIRONMENTAL LIGHTHOUSE CERTIFIED

A certified business meets criteria adapted to its own operations and industry, and implements measures for more environmentally friendly operations and sustainable value chains as well as a good working environment. An Environmental Lighthouse certificate is awarded after an independent assessment by a certifier.

Miljøfyrtårn is the first international certification scheme in Europe to be recognized by the European Commission. The recognition is proof that the scheme has standards and quality in line with international labeling schemes (EMAS and ISO 14001).

Certification is therefore an extra level of security for the customer. It proves that we work systematically with the environment and do everything we can within our industry.

CODE OF CONDUCT

At Bedtime, we promote good labor and environmental standards in our supply chains. We work closely with our business partners to achieve this goal. That is why we have developed a Code of Conduct to illustrate what we expect from our suppliers and business partners, and not least ourselves. The guidelines cover human rights, labor rights, the environment and corruption.

PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE

Through life cycle analysis (LCA), we assess the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle. This includes all stages of the life cycle, from raw material extraction and production to distribution, use and waste treatment. Through LCA, “hotspots” in the product’s life cycle where the environmental impact is greatest are identified, and measures are taken to reduce this impact.

Here are some strategies and practices to help reduce environmental impact:

Sustainable Design : Designing products for maximum efficiency and minimum waste. This includes using recyclable materials, designing for easier disassembly, and reducing the number of components.

Bedtime AS is conscious of our packaging choices for our products, both what we receive and what we send out. The majority of the packaging is cardboard, but we also receive, for example, larger deliveries of parts in large wooden crates. Unfortunately, there is still a need for some use of plastic packaging, but we only use it where it is absolutely necessary.

Material Selection : We strive to choose environmentally friendly materials that are durable, recyclable, and have a low environmental impact in production and processing. All of our mattresses are made from renewable materials where possible.

All our products are CE marked and Oeko-Tex certified. CE marking is a European certification mark that shows that a product has been assessed by the manufacturer and found to meet EU safety, health and environmental requirements.

OUR FOAM MATTRESSES ARE CERTIPUR CERTIFIED

A mattress is an intimate product, and on average, people spend 1/3 of their lives sleeping, so the material in the mattress is not only important for nature, but also for the person sleeping on it. Certipur is a certification program that guarantees that a foam product, such as a mattress, is made with low-emitting materials and is free of harmful chemicals. This certificate ensures consumer safety in terms of product quality and health risks.

We highlight 3 important elements to consider when choosing materials for mattresses:

Use of raising agent in foam plastic: The raising agent in foam plastic (polyurethane foam plastic) should not be methylene chloride or dichloromethane.

Use of phthalates: The products must not contain phthalates on the candidate list or the restriction list in the REACH chemicals regulation, above 0.1 percent by weight. The REACH regulation has been implemented in Norwegian law in the Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH Regulation).

Use of flame retardants: Halogenated flame retardants should not be present in the products. The halogens are fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine and tennessine.

OEKO-TEX AND CE MARKING

All our products are CE marked: CE marking is a European certification mark that shows that a product has been assessed by the manufacturer and found to meet EU safety, health and environmental requirements.

Oeko-tex certified: All of our bedding is Oeko-tex certified. Products marked with Trygge Tekstiler (Oekotex) must not contain allergenic dyes or carcinogenic dyes. The label also provides a guarantee that the product has been tested for chlorinated phenols, phthalates, organic tin compounds, etc. A selection of our bedding is also organic.

LOGISTICS AND DISTRIBUTION

We continuously work towards streamlining transportation and distribution networks by reducing transportation distances, utilizing more efficient transportation methods, and planning to maximize payload.

It is important not to overpack shipments, and to use recyclable packaging as much as possible. We also vacuum pack those products that are suitable to reduce volume during transport to optimize shipping capacity. We also try to both combine packaging and coordinate deliveries as much as possible.

Bedtime AS operates a fully electric fleet of vehicles. In our daily work, these vehicles are used for delivery, service, customer meetings, trade fair activities and the like. We work for the most return freight . This means that as far as possible, empty cars are not returned.

Transport provider

Our main transport provider is Collicare, which contributes to environmental focus throughout the supply chain. They use environmentally friendly vehicles that use biodiesel/gas and electricity.

ColliCare is involved in programs where they set science-based targets through the Science Based Target initiative. They are, among other things, involved in projects that limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. Read more about Collicare's environmental profile here: https://www.collicare.no/om-collicare/baerekraft

We also use other suppliers such as Bring. Read more about Bring's environmental profile here: https://www.bring.no/radgivning/mybring/rapporter-klima-og-miljorapporter-i-mybring

REUSE AND RECYCLING

Extending Product Life : It is important to design products for durability and ease of repair to extend the product's life, which in turn reduces the need for frequent replacements and results in less waste.

All parts for our air-based mattresses are available as spare parts, and for healthcare we offer, among other things: preparation for reuse as a service – which includes technical inspection, pressure test, washing and disinfection before return to the customer. This allows the same mattress to be used by many users and they can utilize its lifespan to the maximum.

Reuse and Recycling : Create systems for the reuse of products or their components, and easy collection and recycling of used products. We have implemented return and reuse programs to facilitate recycling.

Electrical waste: When it comes to air mattresses, it is important that the pumps go to electronic waste. We are a member of Renas, the country's leading EE recycling company. We also take back electronic waste from our customers to ensure that it is sorted correctly or possibly recycled.

RENAS ensures that:
– Raw materials worth over a billion kroner are returned to the market every year.

– 80% of the waste that RENAS collects is recycled into new materials.

Green dot: All companies must take their share of environmental responsibility for packaging and ensure that its materials are recycled. We do this through membership in Grønt Punkt Norge.
Grønt punkts provides collection and recycling of plastic, metal, wood and glass packaging, beverage cartons, packaging cardboard and corrugated cardboard. They collaborate with the Norwegian Environment Agency to ensure good framework conditions for circular packaging.

MEASURING THE IMPACT AND FOLLOWING UP MEASURES

In order to reliably document and measure the effect of measures to reduce environmental impact, we have set targets for environmental measures in our environmental lighthouse portal. This is part of the environmental lighthouse and must be updated regularly. Environmental measures are not a one-off event but part of a continuous process of improvement. Regular monitoring and auditing of the measures, as well as implementation of improvements, is essential.
